The short answer
Write down the purpose of the conversation, one concrete example and one question you want to ask. Choose a suitable time and aim for a useful exchange rather than a perfect performance.
Make the purpose specific
“I need to be more confident” is hard to act on. “I want to ask my manager which skills I need for the next role” gives you a conversation to prepare. Decide what you want to understand or agree.
Separate what happened from what you are assuming. A factual example is usually easier to discuss than a broad claim about someone’s intentions.
Prepare a simple opening
Try this adaptable opening: “Could we talk about [specific topic]? I would like to understand [question] and agree [next step].” Use words you would actually say.
Practise the opening aloud once. Then prepare an open question and leave space for the answer. You do not need to script everything the other person might say.
- What do I want them to understand?
- What do I need to hear from them?
- What would a useful next step look like?
Decide what happens afterwards
You may not get a final answer in one conversation. A useful outcome could be a follow-up date, a clearer explanation or an agreement to look at options. Write down anything you agree so it does not become another vague intention.
These are practice suggestions for everyday conversations. If a conversation involves intimidation or an unsafe situation, prioritise suitable support rather than treating it as a confidence exercise.
ONE SMALL ACTION
Try this today.
Write a two-sentence opening and one question for a conversation you want to have. Choose when and where you could ask for it.
Add a task to my daily focusCommon questions
What if I feel nervous?
You can acknowledge that the topic matters to you and refer to a short note. Preparation is useful even when it does not remove nerves.
Do I need a coach?
Not necessarily. Start with a small practice step. If you want ongoing feedback, explore the kind of support and costs that fit your needs.
